The Entomologist
Bronze
Commissioned by Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana
The sculpture depicts Rachel Carson (a marine biologist, conservationist, and pioneering nature writer), J.J. Davis (head of the Purdue Department of Entomology from 1920 to 1956), and John V. Osman (who succeeded Davis upon his retirement). They are depicted here observing a tiger swallowtail butterfly at the age each would have been in 1924. Each of these individuals had a significant impact on the science and profession of entomology.
